Materials and co-authors: wild clay of Rotvoll, Strandstjerne and others.
we eat earth—intertidal is a participatory food installation and performance developed in dialogue with Rotvoll’s coastal and intertidal zone.
The installation consists of a series of clay vessels. The vessels are made from wild clay foraged in the area and fired in an open fire on site. Inside the vessels is Stranstjerne (seashore aster), an edible plant that grows in the intertidal zone of the Rotvoll peninsula. The leaves have been foraged locally and prepared in various ways. The audience is invited to taste fermented leaves, pickled leaves, baked chips, as well as fresh leaves and dried flowers.
The installation is placed within the intertidal zone, where all the materials have been gathered. Pitala and Razny move between the installation and the audience, their movements tracing the movement of the tides within the zone. As they move, they transport the food and pass it to the audience from hand to hand in a gesture of sharing.
